JUST IN: Lionel Messi Set to Start as Inter Miami Face Cruz Azul in Campeones Cup


The highly anticipated matchup brings together the reigning MLS Cup champion, Inter Miami, and Cruz Azul, the reigning Liga MX Campeón de Campeones winner. The one-match competition will determine the champion of the 2026 Campeones Cup.

Messi will once again lead Inter Miami into a major trophy match. The Argentine superstar has been central to the club's attack this season and recently scored in Inter Miami's 2-2 MLS draw with Nashville SC. The goal took Messi to 99 goals in all competitions for the club, according to Inter Miami.

The match also marks the official debut of new Inter Miami head coach Cristian “Kily” González. The former Argentina international took charge after Javier Mascherano's departure and Guillermo Hoyos' interim spell. González conducted his first official training session with the team ahead of the Cruz Azul match.

There is also plenty of history between Messi and Cruz Azul. When Messi made his Inter Miami debut against Cruz Azul in the 2023 Leagues Cup, he scored a dramatic late free-kick to give Miami a 2-1 victory.

This time, the stakes are higher. Inter Miami are playing for an official trophy, while Cruz Azul will look to continue Liga MX's recent success in the competition.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET on September 16 at Nu Stadium, with the match available on Apple TV. For viewers in Bangladesh, that corresponds to approximately 6:00 a.m. on September 17.

With Messi starting and a trophy on the line, all eyes will be on Inter Miami as they face Cruz Azul in another major North American showdown.
