2026 WNBA Playoffs: Championship Race Heats Up



The 2026 WNBA Playoffs are underway, with eight teams battling through the postseason for a chance to win the league championship.

The playoff field includes the Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, Golden State Valkyries, Dallas Wings, Las Vegas Aces, Indiana Fever, Atlanta Dream and Washington Mystics. The first round began on September 27 and features best-of-three series.

First-Round Matchups

The Minnesota Lynx entered the postseason as the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season 33-11. They face the No. 8 New York Liberty in a matchup that brings together two teams with recent championship history.

The No. 2 Golden State Valkyries face the No. 7 Dallas Wings. Golden State finished the regular season 32-12 and enters the playoffs with the league's top-ranked defense. Dallas finished 27-17 after producing the largest single-season improvement in WNBA history.

The defending champion Las Vegas Aces are the No. 3 seed and face the No. 6 Indiana Fever. Las Vegas finished 31-13 and closed the regular season with seven consecutive wins. A'ja Wilson remains a central figure for the Aces as they begin their title defense.

The No. 4 Atlanta Dream meet the No. 5 Washington Mystics. Atlanta finished 30-14 and earned home-court advantage in the opening round, while Washington enters the series after securing the fifth seed.

What Comes Next?

The first round can run through October 2, with Game 3s played only if necessary. The semifinals are scheduled to begin October 4 and will use a best-of-five format. The WNBA Finals are scheduled to begin October 17 and will be a best-of-seven series.

With several established contenders and teams making significant playoff pushes, the 2026 postseason is set up for a series of closely watched matchups as the championship race moves forward.
