 Cowboys Stumble in Season Opener: Giants Edge Dallas 28-20 on Sunday Night Football



EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.  The Dallas Cowboys’ rebuilt defense and high expectations met a harsh reality on Sunday night. In the 2026 NFL season opener, the New York Giants controlled the clock, converted at a high rate on third downs, and held off a late rally to defeat the Cowboys 28-20 at MetLife Stadium.Giants second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart was sharp and efficient, completing 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also added significant rushing production. Tight end Isaiah Likely (in his Giants debut after following new head coach John Harbaugh from Baltimore) caught all eight of his targets for 78 yards and two scores. Running back Cam Skattebo contributed a 3-yard touchdown run on the opening drive, and Devin Singlethttps://tinyurl.com/hf9m9n4cary added a late scoring reception. New York piled up 394 total yards, held the ball for 36:40, and went 9-of-11 on third downs while converting all four red-zone opportunities.

How the scoring unfolded

1st quarter Skattebo’s 3-yard run put the Giants up 7-0 after a lengthy opening drive.  

2nd quarter Dak Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for a 1-yard touchdown to tie it at 7-7. Dart answered quickly with a 15-yard scoring pass to Likely just before halftime for a 14-7 lead.  

3rd quarter Another long Giants march ended with Likely’s second touchdown (2 yards), making it 21-7. The Cowboys responded with a 1-yard Javonte Williams touchdown run to cut the deficit to 21-14.  

4th quarter**: Dart hit Singletary for a 9-yard score to push the lead to 28-14. Prescott connected with Williams on a 17-yard touchdown pass, but a taunting penalty on Williams pushed the extra-point attempt back 15 yards. Brandon Aubrey missed wide right, leaving Dallas trailing 28-20. The Giants then ran out the final 5:21.

Prescott finished 22-of-34 for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception (a costly late-second-quarter pick that set up New York’s halftime score). Williams was productive with a rushing touchdown and a receiving score (12 carries for 41 yards; 5 catches for 31 yards). Lamb had 5 receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Overall, Dallas managed just 244 total yards and only 23:20 of possession.

The loss drops the Cowboys to 0-1 and highlights early defensive growing pains. Despite offseason changes aimed at fixing last year’s issues, Dallas struggled to stop the run, generate consistent pressure, and limit big plays and sustained drives. The Giants, under first-year coach Harbaugh, looked organized and physical in their first home opener win since 2010.

Dallas returns home next week to face the Washington Commanders in what becomes an early NFC East priority. The Cowboys will look to clean up the defensive execution and sustain drives more effectively after a frustrating start to the new season.
