41-Year-Old Cristiano Ronaldo Named in Jorge Jesus’ First Portugal Squad



Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career is set to continue after the 41-year-old forward was included in new Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus’ first squad.

Jesus announced his first Portugal squad on September 18, selecting Ronaldo for the national team’s upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. Ronaldo remains Portugal’s captain and record international goalscorer.

The selection comes after Ronaldo said that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would probably be the final World Cup of his playing career. He did not, however, announce his retirement from international football after Portugal’s World Cup exit against Spain.

Ronaldo will now reunite with Jorge Jesus at international level. The two worked together at Al-Nassr last season, helping the Saudi club win the Saudi Pro League title. Jesus left Al-Nassr before taking over as Portugal manager following Roberto Martínez’s departure.

Portugal’s upcoming Nations League schedule begins with a home match against Wales on September 24. The team will then face Norway away on September 27, Denmark away on October 1, and Norway at home on October 4.

Jesus has indicated that selection will be based on current performance, meaning Ronaldo’s continued place in the squad comes as part of the new manager’s plans for Portugal. The squad also includes established names such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias.

At 41, Ronaldo remains one of the most experienced players in international football. His inclusion gives Portugal another chapter with its longtime captain as the national team begins a new era under Jorge Jesus.
