Lionel Messi Becomes Owner of CD Eldense, Expanding His Football Ownership
Lionel Messi has officially become the new owner of Spanish football club CD Eldense, marking another major step in the Argentine star’s growing involvement in football away from the pitch.
CD Eldense announced on October 1 that the club had been acquired by Messi. The Spanish side, based in Elda in the Alicante region, said the change begins a new chapter in its more than 100-year history. The club was founded in 1921 and currently competes in Spain’s second division, LaLiga Hypermotion.
The acquisition makes Eldense the second Spanish club connected to Messi’s ownership portfolio this year. In April, Messi completed the purchase of UE Cornellà, a club competing in the lower levels of Spanish football.
A New Chapter for Eldense
According to Eldense, Messi’s arrival is part of a long-term project focused on the club’s sporting, institutional and social development. The club said it wants to strengthen its position in professional football while maintaining its history and identity.
The acquisition follows an agreement between Messi and the previous majority shareholder, Colombian investment group TH Soluciones Group. Earlier reports said the deal involved Messi acquiring all of the shares held by the group. Financial details of the transaction have not been publicly disclosed.
Messi’s Growing Role as a Football Owner
Messi remains an active player with Inter Miami, but his involvement in football ownership has been increasing. His purchase of Eldense gives him a direct role in the management and development of a professional Spanish football club.
Eldense’s new ownership also comes at a challenging point for the team. Reuters reported that the club had won only one of its first seven league matches and was near the bottom of the Segunda Division standings.
For Eldense supporters, Messi’s arrival brings a new ownership structure and a stated long-term development plan. The club has emphasized its intention to grow both on and off the field.
Regulatory Approval Still Required
Although Eldense has officially announced the acquisition, the transaction is still subject to the required authorization from Spain’s Higher Sports Council, known as the CSD, under Spanish sports law.
The deal therefore represents an important new chapter for both Messi and CD Eldense, while the final regulatory process remains to be completed.
