Rutgers Football Stunned by UMass in Shocking 2026 Season Opener

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights opened the 2026 college football season with a result few fans expected, falling 37–21 to the UMass Minutemen at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Thursday night.

Rutgers entered the season with renewed expectations under head coach Greg Schiano, but UMass quickly turned the game around after the Scarlet Knights scored first. The Minutemen responded with 30 consecutive points and ultimately secured a convincing road victory.

A Fast Start Turns Into a Nightmare

Rutgers initially looked ready for a strong opening. Quarterback Dylan Lonergan helped guide the Scarlet Knights on a 75-yard opening touchdown drive, connecting with KJ Duff for the game's first score.

UMass answered immediately, however, and its offense became increasingly difficult for Rutgers to contain. Quarterback William “Pop” Watson III completed 19 of 22 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns while also contributing on the ground.

The Minutemen's defense was equally impressive, forcing four Rutgers turnovers—three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

KJ Duff Provides a Bright Spot

Despite the disappointing result, Rutgers wide receiver KJ Duff delivered an outstanding individual performance. Duff finished with 196 receiving yards and three touchdowns, giving the Scarlet Knights a major offensive weapon to build around moving forward.

Rutgers also received a spark from backup quarterback AJ Surace, who threw a touchdown pass late in the game.

Still, the offense struggled in several critical areas. Rutgers managed only 42 rushing yards, while the offensive line surrendered five sacks.

Pressure Builds on Greg Schiano

The loss immediately raises questions about the direction of Rutgers football. Schiano is entering another important season at the helm, and Rutgers had hoped its 2026 campaign could represent a step forward.

Instead, losing at home to UMass creates pressure before the Scarlet Knights even reach the heart of their Big Ten schedule.

Rutgers' schedule becomes challenging quickly. The team travels to Boston College on September 11 before hosting USC on September 19. Later in the season, Rutgers is scheduled to face Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State and Michigan State.

What Comes Next?

The Scarlet Knights now have little time to dwell on the opening loss. Their next opportunity comes against Boston College on September 11.

For Rutgers, the priority will be correcting the turnovers, improving pass protection and finding consistency in the running game. Duff's explosive performance offers encouragement, but the team will need contributions across the roster if it hopes to compete successfully in the Big Ten.

The 2026 season is only beginning, but Thursday night's defeat has already made the road ahead considerably more difficult.
