NFL Week 1, 2026: Biggest Storylines, Results and What to Watch Next

The 2026 NFL season is officially underway, and the opening week has already delivered plenty of drama, surprises, and storylines for football fans across the United States.

From quarterback battles and defensive performances to international football and highly anticipated matchups, NFL Week 1 is giving fans an early look at which teams could become serious contenders this season.

Seahawks Make a Statement Against the Patriots

One of the opening week's biggest games was the Super Bowl rematch between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Seattle came away with a 13–10 victory. The Seahawks' defense created major problems for New England, while Seattle's offense received a strong performance from quarterback Drew Lock.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba was also one of the standout players, finishing with 122 receiving yards and a touchdown. The result immediately put Seattle among the teams attracting early attention in the NFC.

49ers Dominate Rams in Australia

The San Francisco 49ers produced one of the most impressive performances of the opening week, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 27–7 in Melbourne.

The game was particularly significant because it was the NFL's first regular-season game played in Australia.

Brock Purdy led the way for San Francisco with three touchdown passes, while Christian McCaffrey contributed on the ground. The 49ers' balanced performance has generated early excitement around their potential in the 2026 season.

Quarterbacks Remain a Major Storyline

Quarterback play is once again at the center of NFL discussions.

Week 1 features several intriguing quarterback matchups, including games involving established stars and players entering important seasons. NFL analysts have highlighted the competition between quarterbacks as one of the major themes of the opening week.

Early-season performances can have a major impact on playoff expectations, fantasy football decisions, and the NFL power rankings.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Monday Night Spotlight

The  week concludes with a major AFC West matchup between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs.

Denver travels to Arrowhead Stadium for the Monday night contest on September 14. The matchup is expected to receive significant national attention as both teams begin their 2026 campaigns.

For Kansas City, the game provides an opportunity to start the season strongly at home. Denver, meanwhile, will look to make an early statement against one of the AFC's most recognizable teams.

Injuries Could Shape the Season

Injuries are another important storyline during the first week of the NFL season.

Every team enters Week 1 with players dealing with various injuries, and several key players remain under close observation as teams prepare for their opening games.

Because the NFL season is long and physically demanding, maintaining a healthy roster could become one of the biggest factors separating playoff teams from those that struggle.

What Comes Next?

Although Week 1 provides plenty of excitement, it is still very early in the season.

Teams will have opportunities to adjust their strategies, develop young players, improve their offensive systems, and respond to early losses. NFL power rankings and playoff predictions will likely change dramatically as more games are played.

For fans, the biggest question is simple: which Week 1 performances are signs of a championship contender, and which are simply early-season surprises?

Final Thoughts

The 2026 NFL season has started with international history, unexpected results, strong individual performances, and several highly anticipated matchups.

Seattle's victory over New England and San Francisco's dominant win over Los Angeles have already created major talking points. With the Broncos and Chiefs closing out Week 1, football fans have plenty more to watch.

As the season continues, every game will provide another piece of the puzzle in the race toward the playoffs and Super Bowl LXI.

Trump’s $500 ACA Refund Checks

Trump’s $500 ACA Refund Checks Begin Going Out to Nearly 1 Million Americans The Trump administration is beginning to send $500 Affordable Care Act refund checks to more than 950,000 Americans, according to administration officials. The payments are part of a program announced by President Donald Trump earlier this month involving ACA coverage purchased through the federal HealthCare.gov marketplace. The administration says eligible recipients were charged higher premiums partly because insurers paid user fees to operate the federal ACA exchange. The White House argues that some of those fees exceeded the amount needed to operate the exchange and that the excess should be returned to consumers. Who can receive the $500 refund? The refunds are intended for certain people who purchased ACA marketplace coverage without receiving premium assistance. The program covers 30 states that use the federal exchange rather than their own state-based marketplace. The 30 states are Alabama...

Jaxson Dart Injury Update: Giants QB Suffers Knee Injury Against Rams New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a left knee injury during Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, forcing him to leave the contest early. Dart was injured during the Giants’ opening possession in the first quarter. While attempting a pass on third-and-8, Rams linebacker Byron Young hit him from the side, sending Dart into teammate Josaiah Stewart. Dart landed awkwardly and immediately grabbed his knee. He was able to walk off the field under his own power but was clearly limping. Dart was initially listed as questionable to return, but the Giants later ruled him out for the remainder of the game. He finished the night 3-of-5 passing for 20 yards before leaving. Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston took over for New York. The initial examination reportedly indicated that Dart may have suffered an MCL sprain . His X-rays were negative, which provided some positive news, but an MRI was...
