Lamine Yamal has matched a remarkable record previously achieved by Lionel Messi after making a stunning start to the 2026/27 LaLiga season.

The Barcelona star became only the second player this century to score three braces in his team’s first five LaLiga matches of a season. Messi previously accomplished the same feat during the 2012/13 campaign.

Yamal completed the record with two goals against Levante as Barcelona secured a 4-2 victory. His latest performance took his LaLiga tally to six goals after five matches.

The 19-year-old had already scored two goals against Valencia and two against Rayo Vallecano before adding another brace against Levante. That gave him three separate two-goal performances in the opening five league games.

Following Messi’s Footsteps

Messi achieved the same record at the beginning of the 2012/13 season. The Argentine scored braces against Real Sociedad, Osasuna and Getafe within Barcelona’s first five league matches.

More than a decade later, Yamal has repeated that extraordinary scoring pattern.

The comparison with Messi is especially notable because both players achieved the feat while representing Barcelona. Yamal is now adding his name to another statistical record associated with one of the club’s greatest-ever players.

Yamal’s Fast Start

Barcelona have opened the league campaign with five consecutive victories, and Yamal has played a major role in their attacking form.

His two goals against Levante helped Barcelona build a strong advantage before the hosts mounted a late comeback. Karim Adeyemi eventually sealed the 4-2 victory with a stoppage-time goal.

Yamal’s scoring form has also helped him move to the top end of the LaLiga scoring chart. After five league games, he has six goals and is level with several other leading scorers.

For Barcelona, the result maintained their perfect start and kept them at the top of the table with 15 points from five matches.

Another Record Next to Messi

Yamal has already been compared with Messi throughout his young Barcelona career, but this particular statistic stands out because it is based on a very specific scoring achievement.

Three braces in the first five LaLiga matches is something that even many of the league’s biggest goal scorers failed to produce.

Now, only Messi and Yamal have reached that mark this century.

With the season still in its early stages, Yamal has plenty of opportunities to add more goals and records. For now, his name sits alongside Messi once again in the LaLiga history books.
