Amazon Cargo Plane Crash at Miami Airport Leaves Five Dead

MIAMI, Florida — September 7, 2026 — At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport and crashed into several vehicles, authorities said.

The incident happened Sunday, September 6, at approximately 2 p.m. local time as Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operated by 21 Air for Amazon, was landing at Miami International Airport. The flight had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to officials, the aircraft failed to stop within the runway area and continued beyond the runway, crossing a road and striking multiple vehicles. The plane caught fire, sending thick black smoke into the air as emergency crews rushed to the scene. More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the crash.

Five people were confirmed dead, while another five were transported for medical treatment. Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. The pilot and co-pilot were among those initially trapped inside the aircraft and were later rescued.

The crash caused a major disruption at one of the United States' busiest airports. Miami International Airport temporarily halted flight operations while firefighters battled the blaze and emergency teams secured the crash site. Flights later resumed, although significant delays and cancellations continued.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the crash remains unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation, with investigators expected to examine the aircraft's speed, landing position, braking performance, weather conditions, maintenance history and other possible factors.

Early reports indicate that the Boeing 767 may have remained airborne farther down the runway than usual before touching down. However, investigators have not determined whether this played a role in the accident, and no definitive cause has been announced.

Weather conditions are also expected to be examined as part of the investigation. Authorities have emphasized that the official cause will not be known until investigators complete their analysis.

Amazon Responds

expressed condolences to the victims and their families and said the company is working closely with authorities.

The aircraft was operated by 21 Air, a cargo carrier that provides service for Amazon Prime Air. Amazon and 21 Air have indicated that they will cooperate with investigators as the investigation continues.

The tragedy marks another serious accident involving an Amazon-operated cargo flight and raises renewed questions about aviation safety, runway overruns and emergency response procedures at major airports.

For now, investigators are focused on reconstructing the final moments of Flight 7598 and determining exactly why the aircraft failed to stop safely after landing.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are expected to provide additional updates as more information becomes available.
